Best Beef Curry (Gulai Kawah) @ Bob's Corner Shah Alam
They still occupy the same corner shop lot, it looks slightly old but do not be fooled by the appearance for inside there is a whole lot of food to savour from Nasi Melayu dishes to fried rice & noodles to wonderful desserts and a whole lot more! This blog just cover all the food they have. There is also an outdoor section.
Their shop sign gives an good indication of what they serve, at the bottom are the words "Menyajikan Masakan Warisan Bonda" which roughly translate to "Serving Mom's Heritage Cooking"; so one can expect cooking that is of traditional taste, and home-cooked in flavours.
Okay, let's see why the hype just about a simple dish of beef curry. This curry in Malay is called Gulai Kawah; it is much different from the drier Beef Rendang curries found in most other shops. Comparatively the gravy is thinner but still savoury with a pleasant beef flavour infused into it, it's so good that I took lots of the gravy and drank it like a soup. One other thing is that there is also chunks of beef fat in the curry, perhaps this is what gave the added oomph flavour.
A close look at a scoop of the meaty beef; a tip here, for more tender meat go for the cuts with some fat on top. There are also some cuts of potatoes.
This place is self-serviced, and the food are presented on a few counter shelves ala buffet style. Scoop your rice and select the dishes you want onto the rice. OR one can go for individual plates of the dishes to share.
Here's my bowl of the Gulai Kawah, looking very tempting - can't wait to sink my teeth into them.
Having had this years before; instead of putting it on the rice, I went for a small bowl of it, scooping up some chunks of meat and many chunks of fat.
Here's another angle that shows the cut of fat. They were soft, slurppy and creamily sweet; but I think I took too much of these, real sinful of me. But I made up for this transgression by going for a few kilometres cycle ride later in the evening; I REALLY did!
Here's my plate of white rice with some beef, a generous piece of ray fish (ikan pari) and some lady fingers that came with the Kari Ikan Pari. I ate unhurriedly, slowly scooping the beef curry onto the rice and every once in a while, sliced off some fish to go with them. What was left of the beef curry, I drank like a soup - they were tasty and not too spicily hot but still I sweated buckets.

From the many varieties of fish curry available, fish must be a favourite among the regulars.
This one is pretty good, river catfish assam curry (Assam Pedas Ikan Keli), the stomach part is the best as it has a good layer of fish blubber.
And my favourite - Ray Fish Curry (Kari Ikan Pari). I must say that the fish here are very fresh, even this ikan pari which needs to be very fresh to taste good.
Not up for fish curry, there are also fried fishes; the Sambal Ikan Cincalok with sambal chilli inserted into them is a favourite among patrons.

At another counter were salad and local pickles (ulam and kerabu).
There is also a good range of desserts like bubur caca, pengat, etc.

Other than the restaurant, Bob's Corner also do catering for company functions, parties, weddings, etc. (including whole grilled lamb & chicken).
