Ikan Bakar (Charcoal Grilled Fish) @ Teluk Tempoyak Penang
Batu Maung, Penang, Malaysia - March 2016
I cycled up and down two hills at Batu Maung just to get to eat this! It had better be good!
I had flown in to Penang Island and was cycling (I had brought my bike along the flight) towards Tanjong Tokong. Having heard much about the Ikan Bakar at Teluk Tempoyak, I told myself why not cycle there and see whether it's that good. But then I had not expected those two hills!
I had climbed one hill to go for the "Original Ikan Bakar", but it was closed .... and my tired legs almost gave way in disappointment. Okay.... don't despair; there is always the other one... so down I went the hill and climbed up another one to reach D'Seafood Paradise.

Let's see what the Hoo-Hah about this grilled fish is all about.
They have a wide range of fresh seafood, all obtained from local fishermen of the Batu Maung fishing village.

Other than fishes, they also have cuttlefish...

... prawns, this is the white-shell variety - with tender and tastier flesh.

Flower crabs...

... and these odd and un-appetizing looking stuff which actually taste very good. It's cuttlefish eggs/roe, the one on the right are more matured eggs and on the left are softer semi-matured ones. I like the softer ones as they are creamy and slurpy. Have to watch the cholesterol levels on these though!

And a wide range of fishes.
Unfortunately, I was alone and could not finish these larger fishes like the red snappers (for full range and pricing of fishes see the menu at the bottom). So I just opted for a medium-sized piece of a sting-ray.

My fish came, wrapped in the banana leaf that it was grilled in, sitting atop a banana-leaf design platter. And served with a bowl each of sambal sauce and "sambal kicap" sauce, I liked both of these. Too bad they don't have sambal tempoyak.... sambal with tempoyak (fermented durians) after which this place is named.
It looked mysterious, I wonder what lies within?

Inside: nicely grilled ray-fish covered with lots of chilli-rempa seasoning. This is the bottom with the thinner skin, the fish was very fresh and the seasoning tasted fantastically good with hints of shallots and garlic; it's so good one can eat without the provided sauces.

Flip over to the other side: the thicker skin was not too thick and very bitely nice. And yes, the flesh was so fresh that the strips of meat were clearly firm.

And to add to the flavour of the food, very nice sceneries of the neighbouring kampong...

... and on the other side a glorious view of the sea. It was a great combo of good food, beautiful sceneries coupled with the whiff of the sea softly blown in by a sea breeze.
It would have been great to sit outside, but it was a hot day; perhaps I will come again another day, in the evening.

YummY! - Gulai Itek (Duck Curry) @ Kak Khaty Alor Setar

GULAI ITEK (DUCK CURRY) @ KAK KHATY ALOR SETAR (Halal)
Alor Star, Kedah, Malaysia  - September 2015
Of late I have been travelling up to Alor Setar quite frequently and a local friend always take me go try the local flavours, good food that are especially unique to Alor Setar only. We had tried the Roti Doll, nope that's not roti canai made up to look like a doll (.... see Roti Doll blog to find out more).
Recently, he took me to try another of their local delicacy, Gulai Itek!
Gulai is the frequently used term in the north for curry. So basically this is Curry Duck, which is seldom found in other parts of the country. So how does it fare? Let's find out.

Photograb from Google Street View
I will let you in on a secret though, the place is not easy to find, it has no sign board, no banners whatsoever. Above is a photo-grab from Google street view, probably taken in the evening when the stall is closed thus the vacant look.
Look out for a blue tarpaulin shade at the road side of Jalan Perak 16 just off Jalan Gangsa, it's in front of the Chin Hin motorcycle showroom.

The food is served buffet style, one even scoops one's own rice.
They had a variety of dishes laid out in trays, but I was here for the duck...

I did pick up a couple of curried brinjals form their choice of curry vegetables.
Hmmm.... the curry pineapples looks tempting.... perhaps next time.

Okay, let's have a look at the Gulai Itek, there were two different type of duck curry served in two separate huge pots - a testament on how favourite this is among the locals. In one of the pots was this red curry with large cuts of ducks in it.

In the other port was a Korma curry, one that is less spicy hot and with that distinct korma flavour.

I scooped up one piece of breast meat from each pot and added them to the white rice and brinjal already on my plate; suddenly my plate looked very full; very heavy. Most patrons will either go for one or the other curry, but I wanted to try both to see how they tasted like, how good they smell too. Just doing my job as a blogger, but other patrons stared wide-eyed at me, probably thinking how greedy I am!

So how were the duckies? The red curry was spicy hot but not overly, it was good and could stand on its own. The korma, as expected was not so spicy hot and slightly sweeter. I liked the korma better, but then I am always partial to kormas. The duck meat was slightly tough (probably they used free-range duck, hence the tougher meat). The strong curries had masked the duck flavour, but slowly chew in and the strong smell and taste of duck slow emanates.
The brinjals were cooked whole till they were fairly soft and the curry they were in was sweet too.

At another end of the buffet spread, were these mean looking deep-fried fatty beef, called "daging bakar". They may look mean, but I guess this must be something special as they were quickly scooped up by the locals the moment they were ready. Seeing that I already had two large chunks of duck, I refrained from getting these... perhaps next time (all the more reason to come back *grins*).
