WAGYU STEAK @ MARIA'S STEAK CAFE
Damansara Perdana, Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia - September 2015
Maria's Steakcafe, originating from Ipoh, is reputed to serve one of the best steaks in the country. Now they have opened branches in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur and Damansara Perdana, Petaling Jaya. Being nearby, I just have to go try and see whether what others say were true.

We went there one fine evening. The atmosphere in the restaurant is dim and add to the homeliness of the place; this dimness however is not good for photography, so please excuse if some of the photos are not the best. And do not be taken off by them as the steaks we later found out, is definitely good.
For starters, we had this smoked salmon which is one of my favourites. The ones here were served in large slices and were surprisingly still juicy even though the have been processed (i.e. smoked). They were tasty with that background of smokiness, but somehow (like in most other establishments) the smokiness did not come through strong enough. I wonder whether most get the smoked salmon from the same source?

The Caesar's Salad was another thing altogether, it was simple yet superb. With fresh crunchy vegetables and wafer thin slices of cheese, it was excellent. I should have asked for more walnuts though.

The mushroom soup was good too, strongly flavoured and with good chunks of meaty oxtail.

By contrast, the Pumpkin Soup was a disappointment. Although they served it a unique way of placing the garnishing into the bowl before pouring in the soup, that did not temper my disappointment with it. It was just too thick, coming close to a puree thickness. Yes, the pumpkin taste was there, but the thick consistency did not help.

I was having a somewhat toothy problem; and decided to order something softer than steak as my main course.... I went for Bangers & Mash, my mistake... no it's not because the bangers were not good, there were almost up to par; but you will see why later.

The sausages were rather good, meaty and tasty, and served with brown sauce. Buy THEY WERE NOT BANGERS! They were more like weiners and definitely not English. Well probably after having tried the Bangers at the Queen & Mangosteen down in Singapore, my standards may a bit high. OR probably it's hard to serve real bangers in a Halal eatery.

Now we come to why we came here in the first place; we come to the the thing that washed away all my earlier disappointments. We come to the mainstay of Maria's, their Wagyu Steak.
They do really specialize in nice steaks here, even going down to the detail of offering patrons different cuts of Wagyu. Maria's serve both Wagyu 5 and Wagyu 7. Both my friends ordered the Wagyu 7 which has more marbling, it was a good choice and this steak with slightly more fat came out smelling and looking good, and this stirred up their appetites even before they took their first bite.

See how good their steaks looked, I asked for a small cut to try out and that's when I realized my mistake.
The steak were real juicy and tasty. More importantly, they were very tender. Even with my toothache, I could easily chew in and savour these delights. Seeing how much I was enjoying that small cut, my friends gave me more. Thank you.... thank you!

Yes, Maria's have lived up to their reputation; they DO serve one of the best steaks in town.
If not for anything else, come here for their steaks!
No regrets here, even if I did just take a few small bite. I shall come again.
