Penang Prawn Mee @ Kuala Kubu Bharu
Kuala Kubu Bharu, Selangor, Malaysia - Septemper 2015
We were doing some cycling to carry out a bit of community service of clearing up rubbish at the Sg Chiling Fish Sanctuary, and as usual we went earlier to have some good eats at Kuala Kubu Bharu (KKB). This time round we went to Yoot Loy Coffee Shop and were surprised at the good food that they served there, this included rather good Hokkien Prawn Noodles that came very close to Penang Hokkien Prawn Mee.
Normally we would frequent Madam Woo's located at a distinct corner of the town which serves pretty decent Wantan Noodles. Anticipating this place to be crowded, we decided to go further down the road to look for other food.
Kuala Kubu Bharu (KKB) is a laid-back town, one that is quiet and has retained much of its old colonial charm. Yoot Loy, with its old coffee-shop look, fits right in and add to this old world atmosphere. The marble tables are day but sadly those old wooden chairs have been replaced by plastic ones.
Off late, like many other small towns, street art wall murals have started sprouting around the old quarters of the town; do check them out when there.
Up at the front of the shop is a stall that sells noodles - fish ball noodles, curry noodles and the prawn mee. This stall is manned by a Malay lady, so one can expect the food served to be pork free.
I went for the Prawn Mee, but instead of yellow noodles I had it with Keow Teow flat noodles; so the dish ended up a mix of prawn noodles and Ipoh Chicken Hor Fun.
Surprisingly, even without pork, the soup had a good flavour prawny flavour. The good aroma combined with the mildly sweet tasting food made this dish excellent, making it one of the better prawn noodles that I had tried. It's a surprise that we had not eaten here before, now we know and now we shall in future.
Other than the prawn noodles, they served quite good Nasi Lemak too. And as expected from an old coffee-shop - very good toasts that actually comes with butter instead of margarine.
