SETAPAK TEOCHEW RESTAURANT (文良港潮州餐室)
Jalan Pahang, Setapak, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - 1st June, 2013
I had eaten jhere many times, but have not been able to write about it as then I just ordered a couple of dishes and it would not have been fair to the place.
This time with more friends, we ordered more. So here goes...
The fish cake came just adequately deep fried to have a thin layer of crispy skin yet maintaining the firm tenderness of the fish paste inside.
Unlike other places that slice their fish cake too thin, this fish cake were sliced to about 1/2" thickness. This gave it a better springy bite with a good tender juiciness. One bite and the fishy taste oozes out. Purrfect.
The fish ball soup came was with many balls and some choy sum. The soup was lightly flavored, just good for sipping.
And they make the fish balls themselves!
The fish balls are made from a different paste. This one is softer than that used for the fish cake and have a stronger fishy taste. One bite into it and the flavor flows out well. This is one of the better fish ball that I have tasted so far.
Next came their signature dish - Fried White Beehon (vermicelli). It was of healthy proportions, heaping up like a small hill. Though I can't say that it is a healthy food, as it was slightly oily and came with deep fried lard cubes.
But, what the heck, good food seems to be mostly sinful - so I just dig in and hoped that our cycling will burn the fat away.
Unlike normal fried beehon which uses a good dose of light soy sauce and is thus darker in tone, this one has just a tinge of soy sauce. The flavor comes from the dried prawns and that "healthy" dose of lard.
This in one of my favorites here, and I never fail to order it.
The stir-fried potato leaves was simple but adequately good. With some chopped garlic it was a good balance to our other "naughty" food.
Their Fried Hokkein Mee uses a flat instead of round noodles. This reminds me of the Teochew Mee Teow, a dried flat noodle that can be kept in storage. I think they make these noodles themselves as it's hare to find flat noodles in the market.
Their frying style is slightly wet and without that burnt charcoal smell (which I preferred), but it was still good - the home-made noodles made it good.
