SUN YOON WAH CAFE @ IPOH OLD TOWN

We were on a little cycling expedition around the fishing villages of northern Perak and ended our ride with a quick spin in Ipoh. Of course while there, we had to go try some of their favourite eats. Dinner will be at Sun Yoon Wah Cafe.


On the way over, we stopped by at Tong Sui Kai (Desserts Street) for some refreshments.
I don't find the food here particularly good, nothing really much to shout about.
But then the desserts, especially this iced fruit salad was really something.

Full of fruits (mango, jack-fruit, dragon fruit, honeydew, watermelon, sea-coconut, ground-nuts, sago, Selasih (Basil) seeds) and topped up with a large scoop of ice-cream it looked fantastically colourful and tasted even bettter!

At Sun Yoon Wah, we sat in the open - a dining area of a vacated car-park. The first to come was omelet fried with onions, chives and prawns.
This is a nice dish to start of with, simple yet tasty. If only they have whipped the egg more before frying then it would have come fluffier nice.

The Kao Yoke (Spiced Pork Belly With Yam) came with thick slices of the pork belly and yam. Perhaps the thick slices are fine for those with a good appetite. For me, I prefer the slices to be thinner. But they got the spices and cooking right as the taste very good.
This is a dish that needs much work to prepare. First cubes of pork belly are boiled till it's almost cooked. Taking them out, the skin is then poked with a fork or some other sharp implement. The cube is then cut into slices and then deep fried, the poking of the skin will ensure that it gets that bubbly crispy texture. The yam is also cut into slices and deep fried. After deep frying, five-spice powder, soy sauce, pepper and a dash of sugar is added. The whole mixture, belly and yam, is then put into a tray to be steam cooked.

Mixed Vegetables Stir Fried With Sambal Belacan.
Another spicy dish and also hot too! The vegetables were slices of four-angle beans, okra, eggplant and split halves of petai seeds. This dish was nicely done with the vegetables cooked and yet crispy.


Hot Plate Stir-fried Round Japanese Tofu.
Cutlets of round soft Japanese tofu were deep-fried and then cooked in a gravy with minced pork, slices of Chinese black mushrooms. Some spring onion were added as garnishing and to a corner an egg was put on the hot plate before the dish was poured on.
This was good dish that went well with white rice.

The steamed fish came Teochew Style with slices of salted vegetables and cubes of square tofu. A few cuts of tomato and some spring onions topped up as garnishing.
A good dish, and would be perfect if the fish was more fresh.

Rain came but we did not have to run helter-skelter for the shades, instead the sheds came to us. Workers carried canopies and positioned it over the tables - that's service for you.
Fortunately for us, the rain came almost toward the end of our meal.

We ended the meal with more icy beer - beer that had been partly frozen and served in ice-chilled mugs. When poured out, the beer will foam up with a top layer of iced beer.
A cold and awakening drink to pep us up after a day's cycling - what more can we ask for?
