CHEAP & GOOD FOOD @ XIN HAI SAN RESTAURANT
Sungai Besar, Selangor, Malaysia - January 2013
While on awesome cycling trip riding along the beaches of Sekinchan to Sungai Besar (see The Big River Ride blog), we stopped for a simple but yet very good lunch at this place called Xin Hai San Restaurant.

This place is run by a few Teochew sisters, so presumably most of the dishes should be of Teochew origins. I had come here previously, recognising me, they were happy to see me again. The previous time, I was not too impressed by their fare; but this time my cycling buddies were more in the know of what to order. What came were a very good balance of delicious dishes. My opinion of this place has been upgraded many notches.

First to come was the Bak Kut Teh; one of a mixed of belly meat, pork ribs, intestines and trotters. It was good but nothing spectacular. But I guess it must be one of the better ones here, as most of the locals did order this.

These were cooked and served in rounded clay pots. They have a special section just for cooking the Bak Kut Teh.

To balance the meatiness of this dish, Chinese cabbage and deep fried "Tau Kee" (bean curd skin) were added.

The next dish, in my opinion, was the best of the meal - Deep Fried Sole In Groundnut gravy. The fish, deep fried in very hot oil, had very crispy edges while maintaining the soft fleshiness. Spring onion and red chillies were added on top as embellishment. The gravy soaked giving it a mixed of munchiness and fleshiness.

The fish were deep fried first before the gravy were poured on. It is the gravy that makes this dish, without this it would be just very ordinary fried fish. This is a "must order" dish when eating here.

The next fish dish was superb too! The fish was lightly fried before a soy sauce-oil gravy was added on. They has kept the gravy simple as the meat of this fish by itself is very sweet. One bite into it and the fresh tastiness of the fish gets one hooked.

Although the deep frying has maintained the softness of the fish meat, the head itself was fried till crispiness. I always like crunchy fish head.
Hah! Before I could have a go at it a friend had already whacked it.

This vegetable dish that came had me a bit confused. Are these bamboo shoots?
No, this is the brinjals (eggplant) stir-fried with scrambled eggs with some cut chillies to spice it up a bit. A few prawns were added to add that little bit extra taste to it.

With the eggplant pared and cut into small narrow slices, this dish did not look appetizing. But I have learnt not to judge a book by its cover - it was indeed a lovely dish with a good "wok hei" giving the dish that slightly burnt aroma.

This restaurant is housed in an unpretentious single-storey semi-wooden building. It could be easy to miss, just look out for a shop that's painted in light blue colour.
Unpretentious or not, the food served here is delightful and very cheap too! For the above meal (together with another stir-fried mixed veggie dish) it cam to only Rm14 per pax! (Psst... please don't tell them).
