For a small town, Kampar has lots of good food. At it's old town I savoured good green tea tofu (... see Kam Ling blog). This time round I got these char siew (that's bbq pork) buns from Jia Kampar Restaurant.

These buns and other dessert delicacies are sold from a counter at the front five-foot way of the restaurant.

Each batch of the buns coming out fresh from the oven are quickly snapped up by customers; most of whom take away. So do go there early (before 2 pm.) or else you will be disappointed to find them sold out. Or you can call in to pre-order.

The buns are about three inches in diameter, with a sheen of thin caramel covering their tops.

Make no mistakes though, these buns although baked are unlike the hard crispy Seremban Siew Pau. They are more bread-like in texture.
What I like about these is that they are fluffy and soft, nice to bite into with just enough char siew meat. The crust itself is thin and not crunchy making the whole bun easier to bite, and no worries about spilling crusty bits.

A peep inside shows the char siew to be diced and cooked with some spring onions. The meat itself has just a little bit of fat, catering to the diet of the health concious. It is sweet but not overly. The amount char siew is just nice to balance the breaded portion of the bun.

I will let you in on another secret; they sell wonderful egg tarts here too. I had a free sampling when the boss lady offered me one. On my next trip up to Kampar, I will buy more and let you all know how good they are.

      Yes they start selling from around 11am. On good days finished by 3 or 4pm
