SANTAN ICECREAM @ KAMPUNG BARU
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - June, 2014
I am always on the look out for santan (coconut milk) ice-cream, i.e. ice-cream made from coconut milk instead of cow's milk. I find their taste more creamy with a underlying coconut flavor. As they are not commonly sold, it is not easy to find them, especially the good ones that with a smooth texture.
There is this old Malay uncle who sells Santan Ice-cream at Kampung Baru in Kuala Lumpr. He sells it from a tricycle cart and is usually parked in front of MR. Johan Seafood at Jalan Raja Uda.
From an insulated stainless steel bucket at the middle of his cart he dispenses out the ice-cream. Available flavours are Vanilla and Corn.
The ice-cream is usually sold in a cup of three scoops at RM2-00 per cup. But one can also opt for the ice-cream sandwich in a long bun. I went for two scoops of Vanilla and one scoop of Corn in a cup, it came with a healthy dose of grounded ground nuts.
The flavor of the ice-cream was good with a strong santan flavor. The texture of the ice cream was slightly icy, hopefully the uncle can improve on this and make it smoother. At the bottom of the cup is a scoop of pulut (steamed glutinous rice). Personally, I would have preferred it without the rice as it interferes with the smoothness of the ice-cream.
Some of the add-ons:
The grounded ground-nuts.
This ice-cream cart is located at the junction of Jalan Raja Uda and Jalan Daud in Kampung Baru, in front of Mr Johan di Lepark restaurant (see map below).
