MENGLEMBU WANTAN MEE @ ANNIE 1 KOPI TIAM
Damansara Utama, Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia - July 2013
Restaurant Annie 1 has a very original name. Has Annie One been there?
Well pun aside, the place serves a wide range of Ipoh-style (Menglembu, to be more precise) wantan noodles in various forms plus some other dishes and nyonya kueh.
Going there on a Sunday, we found the place full, and had to wait for a table - this means literary waiting next to a table for the some other patrons to finish their meal.
We started with a yam cake appetizer, this one garnished with deep fried shallots & some green spring onions.
Of nice soft consistency, filled with dried shrimps and soft chunks of yam, it was nice to bite into and definitely one of the better yam cakes I have tasted.
I had the curry laksa wantan noodles. It came with lots of ingredients - some boiled wantans, char siew, tau pok, long beans, and most interestingly, strips of boiled dried pork skin.
Being of Menglembu origin, the curry was of the thicker variety, and was thus creamier than the Penang version. The char siew was above average, while the pork skin was soft and spongily soaking up the curry.
My friend had the dry curry wantan mee. It is basically dry kon loh noodles with a thick curry at one corner for one to stir in, to a quantity of one's liking.
The wantan noodles were adequately hard and nippy to bite into. The char siew, with a good balance of fat & lean meat, was savoury with a good aroma.
To round of our meal, we had kueh talam.
The white top santan layer was soft and creamy. The bottom layer looked a good pandan green but then it was too soft and lacked that certain springiness.
