BEEF NOODLE @ GYUNIKU (HALAL)
Sri Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
October 2012
On another bike ride (see Kuala Lumpur : Kiara Hills Ride), the gang and me stopped by at Gyuniku for beef noodles, but note they serve also beef rice & porridge too.
I am still trying to figure out what their name means. It sounds Korean, but their food is definitely not Korean - it's a more localized style.
If in Hokkien it sounds like My Cow or My Cow's Milk.
Whatever it means, their food is good!

One of my buddies ordered the popiah (spring rolls). It does  look good, with the shredded turnip not too finely cut and the filling not overly wet as to "melt" the popiah skin.
Just enough gravy at the bottom to add to the sweetness.

Due to a recent biking mishap (see Safety Considerations #3 - The Accident), I was still on a soft diet. The owner of the place, Doris was kind enough to take a special order from me - minced beef & tendon broth.
The broth made from beef soup had that beefy headiness in it. The beef tender to the bite and yet retaining its sweetness.

The tendon was one of the best I have tried, soft but not slurpy; chewy but not to hard!
Garnished with some chopped spring onions and with a heavy dose of pepper, the porridge was just what the doctor ordered for me..... but it was so YummY!
So don't get the wrong ideas that it is broth for the sick! I will eat and enjoy this porridge even in perfect health.

It was a hot day's cycling, and to refresh myself I ordered cucumber juice - good and refreshing heh! heh!
It had thin slices of the cucumber core added in; but I rather have it plain and filtered - just the pure essence and freshness of cucumber is good enough for me.

Other orders were - this Herbal beef soup that came with slices of beef, some tendon and beef meatballs; all to go with rice.

Beef Keow Teow Soup with sliced beef, meatballs and beef tripe. Bean sprouts and spring onions added as garnishing.

Slice & minced beef Keow Teow Soup with meatballs and bean sprouts.

Plain, unsweetened spicy chilli sauce to go with the noodles.

Appetizing & colorful looking ice-kacang with cincau, cream corn, nipah seed, chendul and topped with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream.

Chendul, a Malaysian favorite dessert.

Tempting Sago Pudding!

At on side of the front section is a half-glazed walled off section of the kitchen. The staff can be seen preparing the food hygienically.

Outdoor seating is at the five-foot way and also at two large round tables on the inside. Yup! Those are my biking buddies with bandannas.

The indoor seating area with serving counter on the left.

Gyuniku has a fairly extensive menu, above is the starters menu.

The Claypot Specials Menu

The Beef Noodle Specialities Menu

The Rice & Porridge Menu

The Chicken & Seafod Specialties Menu

The Drinks Menu

The Desserts Menu. Surprisingly they have Tee Ya Kuih, something from Penang but very rarely found in Kuala Lumpur.

Gyuniku is easy to locate, just look out for the cow heads.

My meal cost me RM9-00 for the porridge and RM3-00 for the cucumber juice. Very reasonable pricing considering that they are located at an up-market locality.

YummY! - Balinese Fusion @ Subak

BALINESE FUSION @ SUBAK (HALAL)
Sungei Pencala, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
One evening, a few cycling buddies and me (see Sg Pencala Exploratory Ridepopped into Subak at Sungei Pencala.

Or rather we climbed up to Subak as it is nestled in a small hillock. And was I in for a treat for both my palate and eyes!

Terrace sitting overlooking nice greenery of the Sg. Pencala kampong.
This is a place that one wouldn't have expect to find in a Malay Kampong area like Sungei Pencala.
But it's there! A diamond in the wild.

Greenery is all around us, the place is built into nature - blending well into the hill with its Balinese style. I must come another day during the daytime, it should look so much better then.

Well, enough of the beautiful surrounding, time to EAT! We sat ourselves in these rustic surroundings and made our order.

Most of us ordered the Angel Hair Curry Spaghetti. It came with two halves of a tiger prawn, tau pok and bean sprouts.
The angel hair was soft, mid-way between mee and vermicelli. It's fine texture soaking in the prawn flavored so curry well that each mouthful was a good balance of curry and pasta.
They must have used prawn soup to cook the curry. It was sweet, prawn flavored just nicely thick with coconut milk without being overbearing. So good that I drank it all to the last drop... Finisto!

For starters, one of my buddies ordered the gado-gado. It came well presented, looking almost too nice to eat.
The portion was small, just adequate for one person, but it must have been good as my friend finished all of it.
I nipped a taste of the sauce for that's where the secret of gado-gado lies - a good sauce.
It was good with a hint of tamarind sourness, better than many other eateries that tend to forget the tamarind. Those end up tasting like satay sauce AND not gado-gado sauce!

Another buddy ordered the seafood spaghetti. He was not to happy with it, complaining that the pasta was to tough.

For drinks, I had a mixed berry smoothie. It was good but a little to sweet for me. But then I do not have a sweet-tooth, preferring drinks and desserts of fair sweetness.

My buddy sitting next to me, being a passionate fella, ordered the passion fruit smoothie. It must have made him passionate as he did talk a lot that evening!

Another buddy, being a simple person, just went for the fresh Thai coconut.

Overall it was a good meal in a nice ambience, so nice that we sat there for close to two hours soaking in the place while chatting. Subak really lived up to their catchphrase of "dine with nature".

China - Dynamic Yunnan Day 6

          Footsteps - Jotaro's Travels
China - Dynamic Yunnan 24th to 31st August 2011
Day 6 : 29th August 2011
Tibetan Yurt
Today is snowy mountains viewing day. Enroute from Shagri-la back to Lijiang, we went up even higher (about 3,500m above sea level) to the Blue Valley Mountain and from there ride cable cars up the Shika Snow Mountains. Later we will visit another ancient town, the Dukezong Ancient Town before proceeding to Lijiang.

From Shangri-la back to Lijiang by the same route about 172 km, but we stopped by to see a grand mountain. (10hrs bus ride including stops)  (see Google Interactive Map)

Packing our bags, we had a last look at the Shangri-la hills and valley and departed, somehow I don't think I will miss the place that much - I was expecting so much more after reading about this paradise on earth. I suspect that they named this place just to attract people, as in maps the place is referred to as Deqen. It is nice but definitely not what one would envision from the story books.

We reached the base of Shika Snow Mountain, it's only half an hour from Shangri-la. But just before reaching, we stopped by at a shop to by thicker clothing for some colleagues, woolen gloves for ourselves - and as recommended, oxygen cans! We will be going up to the top base (not the top) of the snowy mountains at it will be around 4,500 meters above sea level where the air is even more rarefied. Hence the oxygen cans to help out in case any of us run short of breath.

Going up the cable car and looking down, the valley is seen shrouded in the clouds, we are that high up for that to happen. But the view, although a bit, eerie was captivating.

On the way up we can see the Shika Snow Mountain, only thing is there's no snow! Well it's late summer, so no snow...
But we can see some yaks grazing on the mountain slope (see those 3 black/brown dots somewhere in the middle). They seem so comfortable on the steep slope, this is THEIR environment.

The cable car ride is in two stage with a mid-station stop at a valley pasture. Each stage of the ride takes about 30 minutes.
At the mid-station stop, far away, across the pasture, huts of the Nixi tribes can bee seen; those yaks roaming the mountain slopes must be theirs.

We are now at 3750 meters above sea level, the trail of the cable car towers leading to the top of Shika mountains formed an intricate pattern.
The cable cars move continuously, each car can seat 6 persons. So we are grouped into batches of six, and quickly hopped on! No falling there....

Station at top of Shika Mountain
Finally we are at the top station!
4,500 meters above sea level!
That's the height of Mount Kinabalu, the highest peak in South East Asia.

AMAZING!
That's the word that came to my mind when I looked down from the top.
The clouds are well below us and Shangri-la was nowhere to be seen.
But what about the mountaintop itself?

The top is quite desolate, devoid of trees and with some grass growing on gentler slopes. Other than that it is a barren, rocky place. The peak is another 100 meters up, with a radio tower standing strategically on top.
Boardwalks have been erected for the tourists to easily walk around the area.

This panoramic view shows two other mountains, the Yulong & Meili Snow Mountains, shooting up even higher!
In the far background are the lower ranges of the eastern tip of the Himalayas. This gives a scale of how tall the Himalayas are, with Mount Everest being more than double Shika's height!

Here we are, my colleagues & I, at the central platform of the boardwalk.
Notice the colorful pennants blowing in the wind?
No, there is no fair going on here. These are religious items to ward off evil spirits.

Well, time to go down - back to earth. One cannot be on top of the world forever.
Reaching the bottom, it was close to noon and the mist have cleared. With the sun shining through, these lilacs bloomed colorfully skywards.

Entrace to Dukezong Ancient Town
We said our goodbyes to the scenic mountain and headed for Dukezong Ancient Town just across town. It's similar to Lijiang Ancient Town but is set in a hill slope. No automotive traffic here too.
There are stone paved streets with shops on both sides. But I found Lijiang more rustic, more appealing.

At the entrance courtyard, there is even a yak for tourist to go on a short joy ride around the square for RMB10. But this yak was not as handsome as the one I rode Dali a few days earlier.
I missed my old handsome friend.

At one end of the entrance courtyard is a small shrine. The entrance to the ancient town is to the left and right of this shrine. We had our lunch nearby.

As we left Dukezong to head back for Lijiang, I peered out of the coach window and saw the Shika mountains far away.

Goodbye mountain. Goodbye Shangri-la.....
