PENANG KEOW TEOW THNG @ O&S RESTAURANT
Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia
Whenever I miss Penang Food, I will pop over to my regular coffee-shop -  Restaurant O&S in Petaling Jaya  for a good meal. As a Penangite, coming from George Town, I love this place as it has many stalls selling Penang foodThis time round I among other things, I had Penang Keow Teow Thng.
This Keow Teow noodles soup is good, but some may not like it as they also put in pig's small intestines and coagulated chicken blood. For those not so daring, they can always ask the vendor to omit these items.

Keow Teow Thng is flat rice noodle soup. This stall sells it with chicken stock soup. The noodles are boiled separately and the ingredients and soup added on. Ingredients includes sliced chicken, fish balls and sliced fish cake. For garnishing spring onions and deep fried garlic is used. For the more daring, ask the vendor to add the pig's intestine and coagulated chicken blood.

There are many versions of Penang Keow Teow Thng, many like it with duck soup and duck meat - but I have yet to find a stall in the Klang Valley that uses duck soup. Some stall just use pork, but that one is just too bland for me. The fish ball and fish cake used should have a fishy taste just like what was provided for by this stall.

My noodles soup came, however there was a missing ingredient which I personally like but was missing - deep fried lard cubes! So I asked them to add those in.
I dug in and found the soup to be good, the keow teow just nicely boiled (if over-boiled, it will be too soft and loose that bouncy bite). The fish ball had that fishy taste, but the fish cake still loses out to the ones from Penang. The pig's intestine was just adequately boiled long enough for it to be chewy but not elastic. And the coagulated chicken blood was something I had not eaten is quite a while. Overall - YummY!
At RM5-00 per bowl, it is good value for money.

YummY! - Penang Char Keow Teow @ O&S

PENANG CHAR KEOW TEOW @ O&S RESTAURANT
Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia
Whenever I miss Penang Food, I will pop over to my regular coffee-shop -  Restaurant O&S in Petaling Jaya  for a good meal. As Penangites, coming from George Town, I love this place as it has many stalls selling Penang foodThis time round I among other things, I had Penang Char Keow Teow.

Char Keow Teow is flat rice noodles fried with bean sprouts, chives, slices of Chinese sausage, cockles and with the optional egg. For seasoning, soy sauce, chilli paste and garlic are added. The combo is fried with lard in a hot wok. The timing of adding the ingredients is essential to a flavorful dish.

Good Char Keow Teow will have the noodles spread over the wok and dancing so that the noodles will be slightly burnt - this brings out the flavor of the noodles. Egg are optional as some patrons like their noodles smooth without the distraction of the fried eggs. At RM5/= for a plate without eggs it is good value for money. With eggs at RM5-00.
Some stalls in Penang still fry it the traditional way - over a charcoal fire and offering an option of either chicken or duck eggs.

My Char Keow Teow came, it was nicely fried - with the noodles slightly burnt and the beans sprout a bit raw and crunchy. Overall, it is delicious with the garlic giving a good bite to my tongue. I had mine without eggs, and the smoothness and bounciness of the noodles just added to the experience. It would have been even better if they had added deep fried lard cubes, sinful but better. YummY!

YummY! - Penang Chee Cheong Fun @ O&S

PENANG CHEE CHEONG FUN @ O&S RESTAURANT
Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia
Whenever I miss Penang Food, I will pop over to my regular coffee-shop -  Restaurant O&S in Petaling Jaya  for a good meal. As a Penangite, coming from George Town, I love this place as it has many stalls selling Penang foodThis time round among other things, I had Penang Chee Cheong Fun.

Chee Cheong Fun is steamed rice flat noodles. In preparation, a 1/10inch thin layer of one foot by one foot rice flour mix is poured over a cloth and left to cook in a steamer. The consistency of the mix with water is important, too dry and it ends up hard; too much water and it ends up a soggy gel! The cooked chee cheong fun must be just hard without jelly-ish but soft enough for the teeth to sink in.
Some varieties have cut spring onion sprinkled on top while cooking.

After being cooked, thin a layer of vegetarian oil is applied to the top and the whole piece is rolled into a 1-foot long roll. These rolls are then stored up for the day, and steamed again for about ten minutes before serving.

The vendor when selling it, will take the rolls out from the steamer, unroll it and cut it into 1/2-inch strips. Diluted prawn paste (from Penang, where else?), sweet paste and chilli paste is generously poured on top as a sauce. The dish is then garnished with fried sesame seeds (and sometimes deep-fried shallots) with a sprinkling of vegetable oil. The normal order is for two rolls.
Some like their Chee Cheong Fun just garnished with soy sauce, vegetable oil and sesame seeds.

Just prior to eating, one should stir the sauce into the noodles. Try to coat as much of them with the sauce. I find the Chee Cheong Fun here having a nice consistency. They roll it fully opened and the sauce just goes well with the noodles. Yummy!
A point of note though, the Chee Cheong Fun now being served in Penang itself is losing out as the vendors hardly or never roll open the noodles; and as such the sauce don't coat the noodles well enough. Also, the rolled-up noodles does not have the chewy bite of the opened-up ones.
Sold at RM2:40 for two rolls here, it is cheap and good food that whets the appetite well.
