CHEAP & GOOD HOME-COOKED @ LAOMAZIS
Jalan Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur - November, 2013
I like cycling with Tailim (of the hApPy HaPpY blogs). WhY? We love to cycle and we love to eat too, it's a good balance. And he knows of so many places to eat, places that are treasures. Many of these are unique places not in far away places but hidden gems within the city itself.
This time round he took us to Laomazis, a restaurant located within part of a basement of an office building and accessible through the side and back lanes of the building - I did mention that these are hidden gems. Even though access to this place is not direct, many do know of this place, it just goes to show that when it comes to good food there is no limit on where people will go.
There is an open car-park nearby for ease of parking.
And now let's go to the "treasures":
Eggplant Deep-fried In Batter.
This was crispy on the outside and nicely soft on the inside. The garnishing sauce with cut spring onions and chilli-padis added a tinge of sweet-sour-spicy flavour to the dish.
Bitter Gourd Stir-fried With Salted Duck Egg
This is one of my perennial favourites. The bitter gourd was just slightly bitter, nicely stir-fried so that slices the gourd still retained their crispiness. The tinge of saltiness/sweetness of the duck egg blended well with the bitterness. It was good; but personally I would have preferred more eggs in the dish, perhaps next time I order it will be with an extra egg.
Crispy Fried Char Siew (Barbecued Pork)
Slices of their home-cooked Char Siew were deep-fried till crispy and a sweet sauce added on. The sauce was very good and goes well with white rice. I found the pork slices a bit hard though, perhaps this old man's teeth are not as good as they used to be.
Steamed Soft Tofu With Dried Prawns
A simple dish and yet one of my favourites too. The white soft tofu is separately steamed and soy-sauce/oil gravy added on, garnished with deep-fried dried prawns and spring onion. It's a ying-yang dish of soft tofu with the crispy dried prawns that makes this simple dish so good.
Stir-fried Spinach With Garlic Slices
Another simple dish to balance off the heavier dishes while giving good nutritions for our cycling. Again, just adequately stir-fried to retain the freshness and crispiness of the vegetables.
AND NOW FOR THE PIECE-DE-RESISTANCE
(actually there are two of these!)
Smoked Pork Belly
This is a unique dish, it is the first time I have tried it and I don't seem to recall eating this elsewhere. Chunks of pork belly are slightly deep-fried and cut into thin slices; I am not too sure whether the pork was smoked before or after this. I hesitate to ask as I would rather it remain their secret recipe.
The meat was tender but retained some bite arising from the deep frying and the smokiness have wafted well into the it. The steamed ground nuts was a nice touch, going well with the tasty oil that had seeped out during the cooking.
This is a heavenly dish, I leisurely chewed on the pork, slowly savouring the slight saltiness and good smokiness. YummY!
Chinchai Steamed Fish
They call this the Chinchai Steamed Fish, meaning simply steamed fish; but there was nothing simple in the taste! Steamed with soy-sauce gravy added, and topped with chopped garlic and cut chilli padi it may seem simply cooked but do not be mistaken as this is one of their mainstay dishes.
The fish was super fresh and ... Oh My! ... the gravy was fantastic - salty and slightly sweet. The garlic and chilli added that oompish bite to the flavour. Un-embarassingly, I ordered seconds of white rice to go with it.
As can be seen by the smiles of my buddies, it was overall a very, very satisfying meal. The pricing was very reasonable too, for the eight of us it came to MYR20-00 per pax.
