The National Palace Museum, located in Taipei and TaibaoTaiwan, has a permanent collection of nearly 700,000 pieces of ancient Chinese imperial artifacts and artworks. While Gallery 201 give an general overview introduction to Chinese pottery, Gallery 205a (Magic Of The Kneaded Clay 02) looks into early Chinese ceramics from the China's neolithic age to the earlier Five Dynsaties Era., i.e. from 18000BCE to 960CE

Owl-shaped pottery jars - ash glaze pottery, Han Dynasty (漢朝) (206 BCE–220 CE).
 Ash glazes are ceramic glazes made from the ash of various kinds of wood or straw. Ash glazing began around 1500 BC, in China during the Shang Dynasty (商朝) (1600-1046 BCE), initially by accident as ash from the burnt wood in the kiln landed on pots. Around 1000 BCE, the Chinese apparently realized that the ash covering the pieces was causing the glaze so they started adding the ash as a glaze before the pot went into the kiln.


Stand in the shape of an auspicious lion - Celadon pottery, Western Qin Dynasty (西秦) (265-316).
Celadon is a term for pottery denoting both wares glazed in the jade green celadon color, also known as greenware and a type of transparent glaze. Celadon originated in China, though the term is purely European, and notable kilns such as the Longquan kiln in Zhejiang province are renowned for their celadon glazes.

8th Century figure of a Lokapāla, Guardian King - Sancai tri-colour glazed pottery, Tang Dynasty (唐朝) (618–907).
In Buddhism, Lokapāla (風調雨順are one of two broad categories of Dharmapāla (protectors of the Buddhist religion) - the other category being Wisdom Protectors. In China, "each is additionally associated with a specific direction and the Four Heraldic Animals of Chinese astronomy/astrology, as well as playing a more secular role in rural communities ensuring favorable weather for crops and peace throughout the land. They are easily identified by their armor and boots, each has his own magic weapon and associations.
In this display, this august guardian wears a helmet with raised ear-flaps and armour with elaborate shoulder-plates in the form of a Makara (मकर), a fierce water creature of Indian Hindu mythical origin. The lead glaze of straw-white, amber and warm green have been used to decorate this figure.
