The reign of the Ming Emperor Yongle (朱 棣) (1402-1424) witnessed major advances both culturally and military, including the construction of the vast Frobidden City and many major naval expeditions to explore and have cultural exchange with the rest of world. There was also the production of numerous fine and beautiful imperial wares, including the renown Blue and white (青花) Qīng-huā porcelain. Just as the rest of the world admired and adopted some Chinese art styles during cross-culture exchange, the Chinese too adopted some of the foreign art styles. This gallery and the following artwork (unless otherwise stated) showcases the fine artwork that was collected and promoted during the Yongle Peiod.
The yuhuchun vase and meiping vase in blue underglaze were both adopted for daily use in the Timurid imperial palace in Central Asia.
"A bejeweled Tahmina (تَهمينه) wearing a fur-lined coat looks coyly behind the candle held by her chambermaid. Rustam (رُستَ), shown under the covers, gazes intently at her figure with his hand on a pillow beckoning her. His armor and weapons, situated behind his bed, are symbolic of his heroic valor. With such jewel-like details this painting is not only a great work of art, but a testimony to the splendor of Timurid palace interiors, now lost." - from the 10th-century Persian epic Shahnameh.
The forms of these three bowls (the own above and the two below) are similar and their sizes uniform, the decoration mainly consisting of flowers from the four seasons. Of particular note is that the edge decoration along the inside and outside of the rim and the base is different. The idea of different sets for series decoration in a regular arrangement reflects the unique characteristics of official porcelains.
Bamboo green glaze was an innovative celadon color of the Yongle reign so named because of it's likeness to bamboo. It is produced by firing at high temperatures with oxidised iron as a coloring agent. The glaze has a hard glassy surface, under which are many bubbles similar to tiny fish eggs. Few pieces of Yongle bamboo-green porcelain with its elegant lightness and refreshing purity survive today.
