MABOO'S MEE GORENG/REBUS @ SENG LEE (Halal)
Bangkok Lane, George Town, Penang, Malaysia - 6th January 2013
After finishing a cycling event in Penang (see Ride For Cleaner & Greener Penang), I stopped by Seng Lee Coffee Shop in Pulau Tikus to see an old friend, Maboo.

I have know Maboo for ages, we were both schooling then and played football together; that is when he was not busy helping his father sell Indian Mee Goreng at this very same shop.

His father had been frying for close to forty years and Maboo himself forty years, so that's a total of eighty years experience. Can't go wrong with that many years!
I ordered his well-known Mee Rebus (boiled noodles, Indian style).

Mee Rebus is Chinese noodles boiled together with bean sprouts.
Slices of fried tofu, potato, two halves of a hard-boiled egg, and a slightly deep fried pastry are added on top. A gravy is poured over. This gravy is cooked from potatoes & galangal together with some tomatoes. All of these are so well mashed and cooked that they form a orange colored puree with hardly any solids.

Chinese lettuce is added as garnishing, with a slice of lime to squeeze on for that extra sourish zing.

To top it all of this strips of curried squids are added on. The squids are Maboo's specialty.

This mixed up combination of ingredients made up a wonderful and delicious dish, with the pastry soaking up the gravy like bread.
The squid were nicely done, soft (but not rubbery) and absorbing in the flavor of the spicier curry.
But best of all was the gravy - a sweet & tasty puree with that little tanginess. It was so good I slurped it all in.

Still hungry (cycling does work up one's appetite), I ordered a plate of Mee Goreng.
This is the fried version with almost the same ingredients (without the hard-boiled eggs) thrown in and fried.

The noodles a blanched in hot water prior to frying so that they are slightly softer. During frying a little of the same gravy and grounded ground nuts are added. The nuts add that little powdery coarseness to the dish and makes it all the more interesting to eat.
YummY!

Maboo operates from a stall at the Seng Lee Coffee shop situated at the junction of Burma Road and Bangkok Lane.

That's why they call themselves "Bangkok Lane Mee Goreng". Pricing is slightly on the high side, (about 10% more than most) as can be seen on the price list above.
But the one is paying for good food, one that has been featured in a few documentaries about food in this region.
