Spanish Tapas @ Elli Rocks TTDI
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - July 2022
During our 2019 cycling tour in Portugal & Spain we got to savour very good tapas, especially those from Restaurante Casa Pepe at Alcalá la Real. We even got to try tasty and artistic pinchos in Barcelona! After that pleasant experience, back home we were always on the look out for good tapas places! Now we got to try good ones at Elli Rocks in TTDI!
(for older fans of the place, it was previously known as Elephant Rock - which in Malay means Batu Gajah, perhaps eluding to the owner's home-town of that name? There's even a impressive carving of an elephant head at the bar counter!)

Tickled by our memories of good Mussels in Brussels, we started off with some mussels -
- cooked in creamy butter sauce and served in a small, black clay pot. These are Green-lipped mussels from New Zealand, similar to those we had a few years ago in Christchurch.
The mussels were not as fresh as those we had but definitely much better than those frozen ones usually served at buffets. The kicker was in the sauce - creamy with buttery under-flavors and a zing of the chef's own spiciness (by that I mean full of spiced flavors and not chilli hot).
Next comes the tapas - this Avocado Garlic Chilli Prawns Bruschetta; sounds like a mouthful but this is really a very delicious dish. The name describe all there is about this dish, but still it does not do it justice, it was more than it's long name!
Here's a close up look at one of them, with the prawn sitting on a carpet of juicy, wet mix of chopped potatoes, spring onion, cabbage and even a generous amount of tobiko!
And at the top, a garnishing with a healthy sprinkling of alfalfa!
The prawn were of fairly good size, almost hiding the bread below, and it was just adequately cooked to give it that prawny flavour and yet retain a certain amount of tenderness. Overall the bruschetta was very tasty, well balance even though it had lots of ingredients; AND the chef definitely must have put a lot of effort into this!
There were just two of us, the missus and me, so we just ordered one tapas - so this was as far as our tapas adventure went. No worries we will come next time with more friends for an opportunity to try more varieties!
Elli Rocks serves a wider variety of food, and from their Fusion Mains menu we ordered their Mutton Fried Rice - one of their chef's recommendation. And it was a very good recommendation, served with fresh cuts of tomato and cucumber and top up with a sunny side up and a fritter of papadam!
This was very, very good. It came with generous chunks of mutton..... AND they must have fried the rice with a mutton curry or gravy making the whole dish having a strong mutton aroma coupled with a spicy zing!
We LUV the food here.....
Elli Rocks..... ROCKS!
..... the only thing missing was a Sangria! Haha.
But they do have their Gin O'Clock Happy Hours serving gin cocktails with a local touch eg. gin with asam boi, the earlier you order during happy hours the cheaper the drink is!
