KUEY TEOW BASH @ KORIE'S SUNGAI PETANI (Halal)

Up for business in Sungai Petani; I was looking for good Sungai Petani food when I chanced upon Korie's road-side stall selling Kuey Teow Bash. Having tried good Kuey Teow Basah (Fried Wet Flat Noodles) at Mali"s in Kuala Lumpur, I thought "Why not give Korie's a try and see whether theirs is comparable with Mali's".
Kuey Teow Basah are usually a Malay style of frying the flat noodles. Unlike Penang Char Keow Teow, the noodles are fried with some gravy giving them their wet look; hence the term Kuey Teow Basah.


When I approached the stall, I had thought that they were a regular stall selling Malay food. No, they just sell fried noodles with their speciality being Kuey Teow Basah.
I made my order of the Keuy Teow. The stall also sells drinks, I ordered Teh Halia Ais (Iced Ginger White Tea); and seeing eggs there, I also ordered two "telur setengah masak" (half-boiled eggs).
They have tow woks there and seems to be continuously frying. They fry with gusto, every once a while flames will burst up from above the woks.


Their business is good, with many customers patronising them. I had to wait twenty minutes for my order to come. And when it came, I was pleasantly surprised; there were two nicely fired sunny-side Up eggs done the Asian way, i.e. the tops also half-cooked. The kuey teow were fried with bean sprouts, strips of chicken meat and a few prawns.
I dug in and found the kuey teow to be good; they had used prawn soup to fry the noodles and the prawn flavour had soaked into the noodles, given them that extra flavour. It was a tad sweet though, so the next time when I have this, I will asked them to reduce the sweetness.


The kuey teow also had that burnt tastiness, courtesy of the flaming woks while frying is done. See, keow teow has to be slightly burnt to enhance it's aroma.


As I ate, I looked around. To one side another helper was busy barbecuing sticks of satay. I did not order these; being alone, the plate of noodles with two eggs were enough for me.
After finishing that savoury meal; I slowly sipped my ginger drink and waited for my two half-boiled eggs to come. When they did not come, I enquired about it.
"Er.... boss, the eggs were on you kuey teow."
Oops.... some miscommunication there... Hah! So the noodles does not normally come with the eggs. But for me, it was a good add-on.
Happy with the meal, I left for my hotel.
I will be back for this Kuey Teow Basah... AND with two-half boiled eggs, done their way!
