KAYA PUFFS @ TENG WUN BAKERY
Kuala Kubu Bharu, Selangor, Malaysia - October, 2013
There is this small bakery in Kuala Kubu Bharu (affectionately called KKB) that I never fail to visit whenever I am at that small rustic town. It's the Teng Wun Bakery and the reason for my being a fan of this shop are their Kaya Puffs!
Kaya puffs are puffs filled with "kaya" - that's coconut-egg jam in English-speak.

Surprisingly this place is well patronised, especially during the weekends.
We were cycling from KKB to the Sungai Chiling Fish Sanctuary (... see Chiling @ Sg. Chiling & Clearing of Sg. Chilling blogs ) and stopped by at the place before we started our ride up and came back to collect in the afternoon on our return journey.
So do call up to order before going there lest you be disappointed to find them sold out!

But I am not the only one singing praises about the place, on the walls of the bakery are many newspaper articles giving good testaments about it too.

The puffs are even individually wrapped in plastic bags, this is to maintain their freshness and also to keep the brittle, flaky crust from crumbling, the brittleness of the crust is what makes them good too.

So how to these stand up against other similar puffs?
I like the crust; it's multi layered, crispy, flaky and with a good underlying slight salty taste of margarine - they do not stinge on this.
The infill kaya paste is thicker than most others and just slightly sweet, so it's not too sinful a food. I personally find the puffs from Teng Wun much better than those from Sin Eng Heong of Ipoh (... see more on Sin Eng Heong).

UPDATE OCTOBER 2015: Went their again, unfortunately the standards of the puffs seems to have dropped. They don't have that buttery flavour anymore and are not crunchy crispy too with the top crust being hard to bite into. I do hope that they will have better quality control and revert back to their original.
