German Pork Knuckles @ Schweine Janes Dusseldorf

Düsseldorf, Germany - September 2017
We were on a cycling tour in Europe and one of our destination was Dusseldorf. And when in Germany, one must never miss their pork knuckles. We ate at a couple of places and this one, Schweine Janes was one of the best pork knuckles in Germany and it's reasonably priced too.

The interesting thing about the place is that it has an open-kitchen. Patrons can look in while the food is being prepared. Here the chef is piercing large slabs of pork knuckles into a long skewer.

The mainstay of Schweine Janes is pork knuckles and there are two commercial ovens that does the roasting. The knuckles are slowly machine turned to ensure an even roasting.

The first round of roasting is done at the lower section with low fire to ensure that the meat inside are thoroughly cooked. They are then transferred up to the upper section with stronger heat to fire up the pork skin. Cooked knuckles are put at a tray at the bottom, one which is full of oily drippings to maintain their warmth and juiciness.

Our roasted pork knuckles came, it's a huge chunk, bigger than what we usually have in Malaysia. Looks very tempting with their glazed skin, my friends couldn't wait to dig in... wait! Have to take photos first 😅

The skin had certain parts that's crackling, but other parts were uncrackled, I am not sure whether this is their style or the crackling had not been evenly done. Being used to the knuckles served by German restaurants in Malaysia which came with better crackled skin and also the crunchy skin of Chinese Roast Pork, I found the skin rather difficult to chew on.

But never mind that, let's look at the meat itself. Even before the first bite I knew that it would be good.

It was tender, juicy and amazingly tasty, with the slightly burnt bit the best part of all.
Priced at €13.90 for a set with fires and salad, and €12.50 for a set with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes.

Each roast knuckle came with fries that were served on the same plate and a separate bowl of salad.

We also had this boiled pork knuckles, it's one dish that's seldom found outside of Germany. It looked rather raw but...

But rest assured it's just nicely done with the meat juicy and the skin surprisingly slurpy soft.
And it was real cheap at €8.90.

They have a good range of beers. We had this Schlösser which was a light ale, one that was smooth and easy.
