Taiwanese Minced Meat Mochi (肉圆) @ Nanzhou

Nanzhou Township, Pingtung County, Taiwan - October 2017
On our cycling tour of Taiwan, we were at a the Nanzhou train station to catch a train heading for Kenting (墾丁) after having a good time at Xiaoliuqiu Island (小琉球). With time to spare we went looking for some good food for brunch. AND just outside the station was this surprising find...

A tray of steaming dumplings which we had thought were baozi (包子) but were in fact mochi (餅, もち) with a difference. These are mochi stuffed with minced meat inside instead of the usual red bean or sesame seed pastes. And they are eaten steaming hot!

They were in the midst of preparation and was not ready to serve yet. All the better, as it will give us a chance to see how they go about making their mochi dumplings.
It all starts with this gooey pot of rice dough, doesn't look like much yet.

The vendor uses an ice-cream scoop to prepare the dumplings. With a spoon he scoops up some dough and lay it at the bottom of the scoop; over this a healthy proportion of minced meat is added. Finally, another scoop of dough is added above, and he rolls this into a ball with the spoon.

The "balls" of dumpling all laid out in a bamboo steamer tray ready for cooking.

Each order is served in a stainless steel bowl with some garlic-ish gravy. Cuts of coriander leaves and a dash of chili-garlic sauce is added on top as garnishing. Very nice presentation here, as the garnishing looks like a strawberry.

I cut one open, inside were the mince meat looking all juicy. The meat had been prepared with chopped turnips and spring onions to add some crunchy bite. Overall, the dumpling was very good, with the chewy skin balance by the solid meat-mixture inside.
We liked it so much that we went for seconds!

The on the wall menu. Other than the dumplings they also serve meat ball soup, red bean bingsu (팥빙수) and a refreshing rose fruit drink.

Google's present street view is not updated yet and does not show the shop; here is a view of their shopfront.
