Klang Good Food... Other Than Bak Kut Teh

Klang, Selangor, Malaysia - June 2017
Often many go down to Klang to savour their renown Bak Kut Teh, there are several shops their that sells very good ones. I have tried the one at Kee Heong in Taman Eng Ann, which I found to be one of the better ones.
But this blog is not on Bak Kut Teh, it's on other very good food that can be found around Klang!

We were on our regular monthly ride from Subang Jaya down to Klang. When we reached Taman Berkeley we were met by our local buddy, Eric. He took us on a whirlwind tour of his kampong (see photos of the ride) .... which included several nice locations like the mural (shown above) on the wall of the bridge pier below the pedestrian bridge crossing the Klang River in the town.
As usual.... our mini-tour included eats places, some of which are only known and patronised more by the locals. Let's have a look at what we had:

EAT STOP #1 - TANGKAK BEEF NOODLES @ HONG KEE FOOD COURT, TAMAN BERKELEY

Tangkak, a town in Johore, is very well known for their good beef noodles. But the town is pretty far from the Klang Valley, so I was quite surprised to find a stall selling this at the Hong Kee Food Court in Taman Berkeley. It was operated by a very friendly vendor, a simple old man.

I had the Beef Keow Teow Noodles, it came with cuts of tender beef, soft and chewy tendons, and even slices of cow's stomach. Garnishing were a sprinkling of spring onion (which I asked for more) and some groundnuts.
What I liked best was the soup which was slightly thicker and full of beefy flavours!

Liking it so much, I ordered Round Two, but without the noodles!
Tangkak Beef Noodles Pricing:
Noodles Small Bowl - RM7-00
Noodles Big Bowl - RM8-00
Just the Parts pricing same as above.
Beef Balls - Small (5 pieces) @ RM5-00; Big (10 pieces) @ RM10-00

EAT STOP #2 - FRUITY ICEE SHERBET, FRIED CHICKEN & PANCAKES @ YAO YAO PING PANDAMARAN

Yao Yao Ping, seems to be a happening place. When we arrived at 10:30am, it was already half packed -  the food here must be good, and it appealed to the younger and family crowd.
We started with this fruitee icee, it's a sherbet styled ice-cream that came in several flavours: red beans, Bubur Cha Cha, cendol, watermelon and even sim boi (seasoned dried prunes). I had the Bubur Cha Cha one, while my friends were more daring...

For the more adventourous, the vendor allows mixing of differnt types.
This one is Cendol mixed with Sim Boi ( the layer at the top).

This one is Watermelon with Simboi (the layer at the bottom).

But many come not just for the sherbet, but also for one of the best fried chicken in town.... some say better than Kepsi.
The skin with a thin layer of batter was super crispy, slightly salted and taste.

Inside, the meat was tenderly soft and juicy!
Yes, definitely better than Kepsi (in my opinion).

They have mini-pancakes here too. Saving our tummies for later eats, we did not try them but from looks and the orders coming in, they must be delicious.

These are cooked in a small hot-pan, lucky seven at a time. The above shows ham with an egg and a dash of chilli sauce above the lower batter layer which is half cooked.

A top layer is added to coplet the pancake.
The flavours offered are ham, hot dog and crab (crab-sticks); each sells for RM1-50.

EAT STOP #3 - CHENDOL @ ROJAK & CENDOL BANDAR BUKIT TINGGI

This cendol is pretty good, I find it much better than many, like those Cendol Bakar and Cendol Durian outlets. Utmost was their santan - it was fresh, suitably thick and creamy.

The cendoll noodles were short and not the chewey type. They make these themselves in their back kitche.
Looking at these photo makes my mouth salivate and want to go again soon.

The operator takes pride in maintaining the cleanliness of his shop, even their back room kitchen was very clean. And the cendol were serve in stainless steel bowls.

They serve Rojak and Nasi Lemak  here too.

EAT STOP #4 - FRIED FISH STEW @ RESTORAN KAR HIANG (萫園海鲜酒家)
Our last stop was a heavier meal, lunch at Restoran Kar Hiang (萫園海鲜酒家). Their specialty here is Fried Fish Stew serve in steel pots that have similar shape to the claypots used in Claypot Chicken.
First we had cuts of Red Snapper, the tummy & head part.

These cuts were deep fried first and then cooked in a thick soy stew. They probably used the oil for frying the fish to cook this stew as we could detect a underlying fishy taste. Some dried red chili were added to give the stew a touch of spiciness. Inside too were bits of very good deep fried garlic!

This second stew was even more interesting... Deep Fried Shark Stew. Actually they were using dogfish, a smaller species of shark. Sharks being boneless were easy to eat.

The meat was very fresh, and had sucked in the stew which was much more spicier... it was a thick curry.

Other dishes we had, tasty fish balls soup served in a mini kuali.

Omelete with onion rings and Chinese chives.

Often bean sprouts are fried with salted fish. This one was fried with tau kwa (firm tofu), which reminded me of my Mom's cooking. Nice crunchy bean sprouts with a basic taste and would have been even better if they had added some prawns in.
