Good Home-cooked Dishes @ OK Kangar
Kangar, Perlis, Malaysia - March 2015
Curry Siakap.
Up in Kangar town, there is this place that sells pretty good home-style cooking. No it's not being sold from a house but from a shop-lot in the old town centre. Though a commercial concern, the cooking is very close to what mummy cooks from home. A few of us ate there and came away very satisfied with the good meal that comes with a reasonable pricing.

Their signature dish is this Tau Yew Bak (braised pork belly in soy sauce). This dish is seldom served in public eateries and is more a home-cooked dish, so eating this is like eating at home.

OK's version uses pork that's free from chemical feed (in a way organically fed) and thus has a thicker fatty layer; so the braised meat is nicely tender. The gravy itself is thinner than what I am used to and has less garlicy flavour. The bean curd tofu used is also the firmer type with a nice slightly musky aroma. Overall it was a simple but good dish.

OK serves very good fish curry. We had this sting ray curry. Cooking with ray fish one needs to use fish that's very fresh, i.e. within a day or two of being caught; otherwise a strong fishy smell comes out. As expected the fish was very fresh with it's meat firm and easily retaining the curry flavour. I like ray fish, especially the end fin part as it has more of those soft chewy skin.

A good  combo dish - Stir fried bean sprouts with slices of bitter gourd.
Nothing fanciful, simple yet good in flavour and good for the health too.

Their curries were very good. Creamy with santan yet not overwhelmingly thick, so we went for another round. This time it was with Siakap fish. No regrets here as we ordered more white rice to go with this.... and walloped the curry until the last drop!

Another simple dish to finish of this great meal - Omelet fried with onion slices. Nothing pretentious but nicely and fluffily done.

Up at the front of the shop is a stall that sell roast pork, barbecue pork and roast chicken Seeing that we already had a fair bit of dishes, we order a small plate of the two pork for tasting. The roast pork was very good with nice crunchy skin. The barbecue pork was not too bad, almost at par with those from Kuala Lumpur.
This was a good meal and it was very, very reasonably priced too. Including the two curries the bill came to RM48/= only for a meal that more than adequately fed the six of us. Shhhh..... please don't tell them!
So went looking for good food in Kangar, go and feast at OK.... it's not just ok... it's definitely better than ok.
