CENDOL SABAH @ FONG IP CAFE
Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia - November 2015
I have a penchant for cendol, those stringy green desserts immersed in santan and topped up with good Gula Melaka. And I try to savour them whenever I visit a new place that have good cendol. Among the good ones that I have tried are the Malacca's Nyonya Cendol ; the Teochew Cendol in Penang and Taiping's Indian styled one.
This time round, while on a cycling bike-packing tour in Sabah, I managed to try one from East Malaysia. So let's see how it fares against the others.

We had it at Fong Ip Cafe, located at down-town Kota Kinabalu. These days the coffee-shops there have dressed themselves up to look more traditional and it's good as this gives the area an old world charm.

Except for the self-service counter, this old charm has been maintained within Fong Ip's interior.

We ordered for two: two cendols, some yong tau foo and a set of their famous toasted bread with butter and kaya.

Let's have a quick look at the yong tau foo. We were having an afternoon tea there so we did not order much, just a stick of sweet tofu, a couple of piece of soft white tofu and on eggplant. All were stuffed with fish paste that was one of the best that I have tried. The paste has a good content of fish making them very tasty indeed.

Okay, then. How did their cendol fare?
The santan lacked creaminess, it could have been thicker with a pinch of salt added to give it that good coconut cream flavour. The Gula Melaka was also too thin thus not giving it that strong aroma of palm sugar. The saving grace was the green cendol noodles, in this they excel as the noodles were real pandan green and had that good bouncy bite. Pricing per bowl is at RM4-00, this may sound expensive but their serving is rather large, large enough for two.

The cendol is prepared at a conspicuous corner of the shop right at the front of the building.

Nicely done!

Like most of the traditional coffee-shops, Fong Ip is also renown for their bread for either eat-in or take-aways.

Below are their menus, please note pricing is at time of this blog:
