PENANG LAKSA @ BALIK PULAU VILLAGE
Balik Pulau, Penang, Malaysia - 30th March, 2013

Many have heard much about the Penang Laksa in Balik Pulau town (near the old market) but to the locals this one is more for tourists. For them, another one in a "kampong" (village) in Balik Pulau is much better.
What better way to look for this elusive laksa shop then to organize a cyclo-hunt with a few biker friends (... see more).

The above picture shows the Balik Pulau town laksa, next to the old market. We will be going further, to a village near the new market for the kampong laksa.

The route leading to the kampong shop is a lane opposite the new market. Temporary signs have been put up here and along the way in. No worries of getting lost.

This laksa "shop" is located at a single-storey detached house in the village. They are temporarily occupying this place for a year until their former place at Kampong Jalan Baru is rebuilt.

I ordered the laksa while a biking buddy had the Hokkein Mee.

The laksa comes with lots of fish and garnished with mint leaves, bunga kantan and some chilli padi. A spoonful of fish paste is provided to for those who want that additional flavor.

The color of the soup gives a hint that it is spicier hot than most laksa. But it was not too overly hot, normal for most of the locals taste buds. The laksa noodles were also the springy type that gives a good bouncy bite.

The Hokkein Mee looks good, and I could not help it but took a nip from my friend's bowl. The soup is good with a nice prawny flavor. One of the better ones I have tasted.

Food preparation is carried out at the house front corridor and patrons eat at a lean-to shed next to it.

Mint leaves in the foreground and laksa noodles behind it.

Prawns, cooked chili and deep fried shallots for the Penang Hokkein Mee.

The soups - on the left is the laksa soup and on the right the Hokkein prawn mee soup.
